Why does PTA keep asking me for money? What are you buying?
That is a great question!!!
Actually, the PTA Fundraisers allow us to help the school and the students in a multitude of ways.
These numbers change a bit from year to year, but we try to be reasonably consistent.
Principal’s Discretionary Fund: Each year we provide Ms. Harbison with approximately $500. Ms. Harbison uses this money to fill-in the gaps around the school. That’s right, she buys spackle and wood filler. Okay, not really, but she can pay the last few dollars on a field trip, purchase extra agendas, or anything else she sees fit!
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Fund: We are lucky to enjoy the best staff in the world at Western Hills! Each year the PTA finds around $2500 to give a token of appreciation to each of the people who make this school run smoothly. We only wish we could do more!
School Landscape: Do you have a green thumb? Great, because I don’t, but the PTA provides money each year for someone capable to design and create the 8 lovely little gardens in the front of the building. This year we are using that money to try our Music, Muffins, and Mulch days!
Hospitality: We like to give a little extra “Thank-you” in the form of treats for the staff members celebrating birthdays each month. $200
Kindergarten: Our youngest village members get very tired during their 8 hours a day. A snack goes a long way as a “pick-me-up”. Our amazing kindergarten parents and teachers do a great job of keeping the pantries stocked, but we usually need a little extra support each year. $200
Family Nights: Have you enjoyed the Chili Cook-off, Reading Nights, Math Nights, or Pancake Feeds? We love them too! The supplies for those events cost around $1000 a year, but if you’ve attended them you know they are well worth it.
School Gift: This is a large chunk of our budget at $1500, but it is one of our most lasting contributions. In the past we have purchased mini-blinds so that our front office staff and visitors don’t go blind, fridges for our teachers, the picnic tables near the playground, and the information sign in the front of the building.
We are thinking about trash cans for the track this year. What do you think?
Field Trips: Have you ever noticed how many field trips our students participate in? One of the reasons that we can afford this is because the PTA sponsors 1 bus, per year, per classroom! If you ask any teacher you will discover that bus prices are one of the main reasons that other schools don’t take many field trips. All these busses run approximately $1600!
Clubs and Electives: Our Western Hills students are incredibly lucky to have the opportunities that they do. Each classroom plays a leadership role in the school and the kids participate in electives as early as 1st grade. We want to make sure that these groups have everything they need! $400
School Parties and Events: Each year the PTA plans, pays for, and carries out the Ice Cream Social / Back to School Night, both the Harvest Festival and the Valentine’s Day parties, and the Kindergarten Gingerbread House Decorating day. We provide snacks, games, and supplies. These are fantastic team building events and cost us around $950.
Others: We also purchase event insurance, provide needed scholarships, pay our national dues, pay babysitters for meetings (YEP, babysitters, no more excuses!), support our award winning safety patrol, postage, and printing flyers. All of these miscellaneous items cost us around another $1400.
$$$ If you’ve been doing the math with me then you know that it costs over $7000 a year to make sure that Western Hills continues to be the best place in the world to bring our families! $$$
